The early concepts of blinds were of something which simply
provided a practical halfway house between shutters and curtains.
Colours and materials for early pull down blinds were very
limited, and often proved not to be particularly practical
in some climates and conditions i.e. in areas of the home
where there are higher amounts of moisture such as kitchens
or bathrooms. Early materials faded easily with the effects
of the sun or allowed mildew mould to stain and damage the
blinds.
Large
scale adoption of blinds in modern public spaces such as
schools and libraries allowed many people in the UK for
example to become familiar with the concept and use of horizontal
blinds. Unfortunately the basic colours and cumbersome materials
i.e. white metal blinds, and the relatively troublesome
operating systems tarnished the concept of their application
in the home. For example, such blinds in large public spaces
would often be bent and broken, the string elements tangled
and jammed, and the metal slats dented.
Nowadays
the operating systems for blinds have been vastly improved,
often to the simple, easy turn of a wand. Modern vertical
blinds have provided a redefined and improved concept of
what blinds actually are and can be. Modern materials mean
that almost all manner of patterns, colours, and finishes
can be incorporated. Better assembly, customisation options,
and the sheer ease of ordering vertical blinds e.g. online,
mean that achieving the ideal look and practicality for
your home are easier and less expensive than you may think
both conceptually and in reality.
