Privacy in the Home

Privacy in the home is valuable for personal and general security reasons. For example, popular crime statistics in Britain at the beginning of the year indicated that approximately 30 house / premises burglaries were taking place every hour. Neighbourhood watch schemes and general vigilance among neighbours are important in spotting early warnings of potential burglaries. Privacy is important not just from people who may be looking into or may be able to see into a property, but also in being able to look out into the street unobserved.

Curtains and Blinds

Curtains e.g. net curtains and the thicker outer layer of curtains have traditionally provided the main visual barrier in both directions for British homes. An advantage of net curtains is that it’s difficult to see through them from the outside. Unfortunately, it can also be difficult to get a clear view of the outside from the inside.

Roller blinds or roman blinds unfortunately don’t work particularly well from this point of view. When they are open, there is no other line of defence than perhaps some accompanying net curtains, and when they are partially closed or fully closed it’s not possible to get a good view out of the home.

Vertical blinds however provide a fantastic solution to the challenges of achieving the right kind of privacy. Vertical blinds let a great deal of light into the room, and can be perfectly angled to avoid any unwanted glare and heat while maintaining this high quality light source. The vertical blind slats can be relatively wide and are set back slightly from the window itself. This gives them a huge advantage in adequately obscuring the view into your home from the outside, even if someone were to stand relatively close to the window. What’s more, the angled slats allow a good, clear view out, and mean that you don’t have to rely upon net curtains to back things up. In the fully closed position, vertical blind slats fit flush next to each other so that they provide a very effective visual barrier into the room that could keep any potential burglars or other home criminals guessing, and hopefully make them think that it’s not worth the risk of attempting to look into or enter your home.
